From dear old Mr Bean.
“I would love to believe that when I die I will live again, that some thinking, feeling, remembering part of me will continue. But much as I want to believe that, and despite the ancient and worldwide cultural traditions that assert an afterlife, I know of nothing to suggest that it is more than wishful thinking.
The world is so exquisite with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there’s little good evidence. Far better it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides.”

Stijn gets it.
God, I love this man. I’ve been to his show twice and not only is he hilarious, but one of the smartest people I’ve come across. Always spot on.
Brilliant.
This.

When I was younger and not yet fully (or consciously) ready to accept the fact that my faith was and never had been concrete, I used to collect old Sunday School worksheets and keep them tucked away in files. This wasn’t entirely odd for me, since I liked doing that with everything - newspaper clippings, pages ripped out of my mom’s old magazines, flyers I’d been given, promotional sticker sheets, whatever.
The summer before I moved to Chicago to start college I was cleaning out my room and happened upon one of my many files containing all this random shit in it. One of the files had Sunday School worksheets and colouring pages as far back as when I was five years old. Since I went more out of obligation to my parents than anything, I never made it a point to put a lot of effort into remembering what the weekly lessons were about. As I flipped through the many papers, I expected to find a pattern in which my answers to questions and enthusiasm towards solving puzzles waned through the years.
I found no such pattern. All the papers looked the same. I had been resolutely apathetic from a very young age.

The world judges religion not by what the Bible says, but by how Christians live. Christians are the Bible which sinners read. These are the epistles to be read by all men.

I think Gandhi said it best when he said, “I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”

The opposite of the religious fanatic is not the fanatical atheist but the gentle cynic who cares not whether there is a god or not.

As an atheist, I see nothing “wrong” in believing in a God. I don’t think there is a God, but belief in him does no harm. If it helps you in any way, then that’s fine with me. It’s when belief starts infringing on other people’s rights when it worries me. I would never deny your right to believe in a God. I would just rather you didn’t kill people who believe in a different God, say. Or stone someone to death because your rulebook says their sexuality is immoral. It’s strange that anyone who believes that an all-powerful all-knowing, omniscient power responsible for everything that happens, would also want to judge and punish people for what they are.
